Central America: Figures on the Candy and Chocolate Trade

In the first three months of the year, countries in the region imported $82 million worth of confectionery, chocolates and other preparations based on cocoa, and 48% came from the USA and Mexico.

Imports by country 
In the first quarter of the year, the main buyer of confectionery and chocolates in Central America was Guatemala with $19 million, followed by Costa Rica with $17 million, Panama with $14 million, Honduras with $14 million, Nicaragua with $9 million and El Salvador, with $9 million. 

Origin of imports 
From January to March 2018, 28% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 19% from Mexico, 6% from Colombia and 3% from China.

During the first three months of the last seven years, the USA was the market of origin of imports that has grown the most, as in 2012 it represented 24% of total purchases and in 2018 this figure reached 28%.

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the value imported into Central America registered a variation of 1%, going down from $83 million to $82 million. 

For its part, for the periods in question, the volume purchased also reported a decrease, in this case it was 3%, falling from 30,938 tons to 30,082 tons.
