Central America to have talks with Europe on subsidies

Central American trade and economy ministers will meet with the European trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson, on May 15 in Peru, for talks on progress toward a trade association.

One of the main items on the agenda will be the subsidies that Europe grants to its farmers.
The meeting will be held on the eve of the Fifth European Union-Latin American and Caribbean Summit, which is being hosted in Lima.

Is Central America Interested in an Agreement with the European Union?

To date the Trade Pillar Committee has not yet been formed with representatives of each of the Central American countries, despite the entry into force of the Association Agreement on January 1st 2014.

Central America has not managed to harmonize and standardize regional interests in order to make use of the Agreement with the European Union.

Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union ready for signing

San Jose, June 25, 2012. Today the Council of Ministers of the European Union authorized the signing of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU-CAAA) on Friday June 29 in Honduras. The Ministers of Foreign Trade and the Foreign Ministers of the region will sign the document, along with the Trade Commissioner of the European Union and the Danish Foreign Minister, in a formal ceremony under the framework of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of member countries of the System for Central American Integration (SICA).

Panama Wants to Be Part of EU Agreement

It requested Central America's support to convince the EU of admitting its inclusion even though it doesn't belong to SIECA.

The European Union has insisted that an Association Agreement must be negotiated with the entire region. They consider membership in the Central American Economic Integration Secretary (SIECA) as an indispensable requisite to consider a country as a participant of the Agreement.

The European Union again noted its interest in an integrated Central America where there is a free flow of investments, goods and services.

The seventh round of negotiations of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Central America opened in Honduras with the explicit indication by Petros Mavromichalis, political negotiator of the EU that "regional integration remains a subject of great importance for us.
