SIECA Bulletin on American Foreign Trade from January to May:

Exports reached U.S. $13.10 billion in the period JANUARY - MAY 2012

Central, Oct. 3, 2012.

Exports from the region reached an (FOB)* value of $13,104 million during the first five months of 2012, for a growth rate of 6.2%, lower than the same period of 2011 (U.S. $12,339.9 million), when it was 23.6%.

The product groups contributing the most to growth in exports, ranked by Chapter in the Central American Tariff System (SAC), which in turn accounted for 51.7% of total exports, were:
• Coffee, tea, mate and spices with $2,251.3 million (17.2%);
• Edible fruit and nuts, citrus cuts, melons with $1,321.8 million (10.1%);
• Machinery and electrical equipment with U.S. $1,306.4 million (10.0%);
• Sugars and sugar confectionery with U.S. $859.8 million (6.6%);
• Optical instruments and appliances, photographic, cinematographic instruments and surgical medical devices with U.S. $629.5 million (4.8%) and
• Plastic and glassware with $407.9 million (3.1%).

The region’s main export destinations during the first five months of 2012 were:
- United States of America, $4,298.9 million (32.8%)
- Central America, $3,110.1 million (23.7%)
- EU, $2,204.7 million (16.8%)
- Mexico, $421.2 million (3.2%)
- Panama, $359.2 million (2.7%)
- Canada, $310.2 million (2.4%)
- other countries, $2,399.7 million (18.3%.)
