Regional Business in Decline 
Between 2019 and 2020, the imported value of footwear and its parts in Central America registered a 40% decrease, going from $755 million to $450 million.

For the periods in question, imports from China and the U.S. increased by 39% and 14%, respectively.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In 2020, the main importer in the region continued to be Guatemala, with $121 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $91 million, Panama, with $90 million, El Salvador, with $63 million, Honduras, with $50 million and Nicaragua, with $36 million.

During 2020, all Central American markets decreased their purchases. In Nicaragua, imports fell 14% year-on-year, in Guatemala 25%, in Costa Rica 26%, in El Salvador 32%, in Honduras 37% and in Panama 54%.

China, Main Supplier to the Region
In 2020, 39% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 15% from Zona Franca Panama, 9% from Panama, 7% from the USA, 5% from El Salvador, 5% from Vietnam and 4% from Mexico.

In recent years, China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, rising from 30% in 2012 to 40% in 2020.

Between January and March 2018 the region imported $168 million worth of footwear and parts, and purchases in Vietnam and Brazil increased by 14% and 4%, respectively.

Central America Buys More Footwear From the USA and Spain

December 2017

Between January and June 2017, the region imported $319 million worth of footwear and its parts, and purchases from the United States and Spain increased by 6% and 38%, respectively.
