Central American Cement Trade Down 18%

In 2016 intraregional trade in hydraulic cement totaled $59 million, 18% less than in 2015, and the main exporter is still Costa Rica.

Variation in intraregional trade
Between 2015 and 2016, the total value of hydraulic cements traded among Central American countries fell by 18%, going from $73 million in 2015 to $59 million in 2016.

The volume traded also decreased, falling from 641 thousand tons sold in 2015 to 567 thousand tons in 2016. 

Exports from each country to the region 
In 2016 Costa Rica was still the leading exporter of hydraulic cements in Central America, with $34 million, followed by El Salvador, with $15 million, Honduras with $7 million, Nicaragua with $2 million, and Guatemala with $1 million.

Main importer 
In 2016 Nicaragua ended up being the main purchaser of hydraulic cements from the other Central American countries, importing $47 million worth, of which $32 million was bought from Costa Rica and $15 million from El Salvador.

Central America: Hydraulic Cement Trade Down 14%

Between January and September 2016, the value of trade in hydraulic cement between countries of the region amounted to $48 million, 14% less than the same period in 2015.

More Cement Production in Guatemala

November 2016

The company Cemento Regional has started operating a plant in Escuintla, Guatemala which has capacity to produce 8,000 bags per day.

The company Cemento Regional has invested $12.2 million in the construction and commissioning of the plant, which will produce up to 8,000 bags per day and will supply the product to its three stores in the department of Guatemala.
