Central America and Canada Resume FTA Negotiations

The meeting will be next Friday and will be presided by the negotiators of the countries of the CA-4 (Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras) and Canada.

The Minister of Commerce of Honduras, Fredy Cerrato, informed El Sendero del Peje: "As the Minister of Commerce, I have given instructions to our negotiators that Honduras wants concluded the negotiations with Canada in May, at the latest. The sensitive issues for Central America are sugar, textiles, beef and hog since Canada is a producer of meat that produces at lower costs than Hondurans."

Honduras has concluded the negotiation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Canada, as announced by Secretary of Commerce.

Sensitive issues for Canada like the inclusion of the pork and the beef cuts have been resolved.

The head of the Honduran delegation, Melvin Redondo, told Tribuna.hn, "concluded the second meeting and almost finished with most issues, we are just in issues of sensitive nature."

Guatemala is coordinating schedules in order to resume free trade negotiations between Canada and the CA-4 countries.

Raúl Trejo, vice-minister for Guatemalan trade, indicated that coordination meetings have already been held in El Salvador to agree a schedule for the twelfth round of negotiations.
