After 2013, 2015 and 2016 saw declines in imports of iron sheets, last year purchases abroad grew by 54%, exceeding $922 million.

Variation of regional imports  
During the years 2013, 2015 and 2016, the import value registered decreases of 12%, 4% and 24% respectively.

However, purchases abroad between 2016 and 2017 registered an increase of 54%, rising from $645 million to $992 million.

Imports by country 

Last year the main buyer of iron and steel sheets in Central America was Guatemala, with $288 million, followed by Honduras, with $208 million, Costa Rica, with $179 million, Panama, with $124 million, El Salvador, with $113 million and Nicaragua, with $80 million. 

Origin of imports 
In 2017, 49% of the value purchased by Central America came from China, 20% from Japan, 3% from South Korea and 2% from Mexico.

China is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in recent years, as in 2012 it represented 21% of total purchases and in 2017 this figure grew to 49%.
