Central America No Longer Exports Gold to Canada

In 2012 gold exports to Canada amounted to $377 million, equivalent to 54% of the total exported by the region that year, but four years later the figure has fallen to 0.

Variation of regional exports  
Between 2015 and 2016 the export value of gold from Central America increased by 10%, rising from $429 million in 2015 to $470 million in 2016. 

During the years in question the volume exported grew by 23%, going from 202 tons in 2015 to 248 tons in 2016.

Exports by country 
In 2016 the main exporter was Nicaragua, with $358 million, followed by Honduras, with $95 million and Costa Rica, with $18 million. Guatemala, Panama and El Salvador did not record significant exports. 

Destination of exports 
In 2016 almost all of the value exported from Central America was sent to the United States. and a minimum amount to Switzerland.

However, in 2012 and 2013, Canada bought more than half of Central American gold exports, buying 38% in 2014 and between 2015 and 2016, its purchases fell to nothing.

Between January and September 2016 the countries of the region exported 399 thousand tons of metalliferous minerals, led by Guatemala, with 375 thousand tons.

In 2015 Honduras and Guatemala exported ores such as zinc, nickel and other precious metals worth $47 million and $46 million respectively.
