Central America Imports More Glass from China

In 2016 imports of glass and its manufactures into Central American countries totaled $301 million, and the value imported from the Asian country grew by 27% compared to 2015.

Variation of regional imports
Between 2015 and 2016, the value of imported glass and its manufactures in Central America increased by 5%, going from $287 million in 2015 to $301 million in 2016. During the years in question, the volume of imports increased by 14%, going from 332 thousand tons in 2015 to 379 thousand tons in 2016.

The value imported from China increased by 27%, growing from $62 million in 2015 to $79 million in 2016.

Imports by country
In 2016 the main importers in Central America were Guatemala and Costa Rica with $69 million each, followed by Panama with $56 million, Honduras with $44 million, El Salvador with $38 million and Nicaragua with $25 million.

Price of imports
Between January 2012 and December 2016, the average kilo price of imports of glass and its manufactures into countries in the region fell by 21%, falling from $0.90 to $0.71.

Origin of imports
In 2016, 26% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 12% from Mexico, 12% from the United States, and 3% from Brazil.

More Chinese Glass in Guatemala

November 2017

In 2016, purchases of glass and its manufactures abroad totaled $69 million, and compared to 2015, imports from China and Costa Rica grew by 18% and 34%, respectively.
