Central America Imports Fewer Aluminum Containers

Between 2015 and 2016, the value of imports of aluminum packaging in Central American countries fell by 8% and the imported volume fell by 12% in the same period.

Main importers
 
Among the main importers are: Envases Universales Rexam, Productora La Florida, Industrias La Constancia, Livsmart Américas, Cervecería Panamá, Cervecería Centroamericana, Alimentos Maravilla, Coca Cola Femsa de Panamá, Embotelladora La Cascada, Industrias del Atlántico, Cervecería Nacional, Unipharm, Durman Esquivel and Jumex Centroamericana, which together account for approximately 65% of regional imports.

Variation of regional imports 
Between 2015 and 2016 the volume of imported aluminum containers fell by 12%, dropping from 32 thousand tons in 2015 to 28 thousand tons last year. 

The imported value fell by 8%, going from $163 million in 2015 to $150 million the following year.

Imports by country 
In 2016 the main importer of aluminum packaging in Central America was Guatemala with $50 million, followed by El Salvador with $31 million, Honduras with $21 million, Costa Rica with $20 million, Nicaragua with $15 million and Panama with $14 million.

Origin of imports 
In 2016, 25% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 19% from the United States, and 1% from Colombia.

In 2016 the volume of imported aluminum and its manufactures in the region amounted to 149 thousand tons, equivalent to $572 million, 11% less than the value bought in 2015.
