Central America: Growing Imports of Bakery Products

From January to September 2016 Central American countries imported 163,000 tons of baked goods, biscuits and cakes, 4% more than in the same period in 2015.

Changes in imports
Between January and September 2016 the total volume of baked goods imported from Central America increased by 4%, going from 158 thousand tons imported, equivalent to $335 million, from January to September 2015, to 163,000 tons imported, equivalent to $340 million, during the same period in 2016.

Imports by country
In the first three quarters of 2016 Honduras was the largest importer of baked goods, buying 37,957 tons, followed by Guatemala with 37,930 tons, Nicaragua with 25,839 tons, Panama with 22,045 tons, Costa Rica with 20,241 tons, and El Salvador with 19,555 tons. 

Price of imports by country
During the months between January 2012 and September 2016 the lowest average price per kilo was $1.48, recorded in July 2014 in Guatemalan imports, and the highest was $2.92 per kilo in October 2014 corresponding to Panamanian imports.
