The largest activities are tuna, shrimp aquaculture and inshore fishery.

Ospesca is the fishing division of the Central American Intgration System. According to their data, over 100.000 households depend on fishing for their daily income. 25% of these are small fishermen.

Fishing Industry to Grow 7.5% in 2018

According to projections by the Nicaraguan fishing sector, this year growth could be explained, mainly, by the performance of the production of lobster, sea cucumber and fish.

After the local fishing industry registered $282 million in sales abroad in 2017, the Central Bank of Nicaragua and the Nicaraguan Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Inpesca) jointly prepared a projection for 2018, the result of which is an expectation that the sector will grow 7.5%.

Tuna Quota in Costa Rica Put on Hold

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has announced that the response to the request to increase the tonnage of fishing in the Eastern Pacific will be given in October.

Noting a lack of sufficient information and studies to determine more clearly the potential impact of increasing the quota, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) said it will postpone the decision until October.

Costa Rica's Tuna is Fished by Other Countries

90% of the tuna catch made in Costa Rican waters is unloaded in other countries, mainly Ecuador.

So says the executive director of the Costa Rican Fisheries Federation (Fecop), Enrique Ramirez. Meanwhile, local fishermen are having a tough time due to declining marine resources.

From July onwards, fishing boats in Central America will be surveilled via satellite.

Vessels fishing within 40 nautical miles of Central America, both in the Atlantic and the Pacific, will be equipped with satellite control devices, explained Heiner Mendez, from the Central American Fishing and Aquaculture Organization (Ospesca).
