In 2017, purchases from Central American countries totaled $759 million, 25% more than the previous year's imports, in contrast to the fall reported between 2015 and 2016.

Imports by country 

In 2017, the main importer of fertilizers in Central America continued to be Guatemala with $232 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $156 million, Honduras with $146 million, Nicaragua with $100 million, El Salvador with $70 million and Panama with $60 million.

Variation of imports 
Between 2016 and 2017, the value imported into the region grew by 25%, increasing from $601 million to $759 million.

The increase recorded in 2017 represents a recovery of purchases abroad, as in 2016, a negative variation of 25% was registered.

Origin of imports 
In 2017, 28% of the value purchased by Central America originated in China, 14% in Russia, 12% in the USA, 7% in Finland and 6% in Latvia.

China is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in recent years, as in 2012 it represented less than 1% of total purchases and in 2017 this figure rose to 28%.

Price of Imported Fertilizers Continues to Fall

The average price per kilo of fertilizers imported by the Central American countries dropped from $0.54 in January 2012 to $0.27 in March 2018, registering a 50% drop.

Fertilizers in Honduras: Purchases Recover in 2017

After four years of registering reductions in purchases of fertilizer from abroad, in 2017 the country imported $146 million worth, 20% more than was reported in 2016.
