Central America: Fertilizer Imports Increase 12%

During the first half of 2018, purchases by countries in the region reached $494 million, 12% more than imports during the same period the previous year.

Variation in regional imports
The volume of fertilizers imported between the first semester of 2017 and the same period of 2018 registered a decrease of 3%, falling from 1.52 million tons to 1.47 million tons.

For the periods in question, the value imported increased by 12%, from $439 million in 2017 to $494 million in 2018.

Imports by country
From January to June 2018, the main importer of fertilizers in Central America was Guatemala with $180 million, followed by Honduras with $104 million, Costa Rica with $93 million, El Salvador with $50 million, Nicaragua with $40 million and Panama with $27 million.

Origin of imports
During the first half of the year, 20% of the value imported from Central America was from Russia, 15% from China, 7% from the U.S. and 7% from Mexico.

More Russian Fertilizers in Costa Rica

August 2018

In the first quarter of 2018, companies in the country imported $34 million worth of fertilizers, and purchases in Russia totaled $12 million, 45% more than in the same period in 2017.

Price of Imported Fertilizers Continues to Fall

July 2018

The average price per kilo of fertilizers imported by the Central American countries dropped from $0.54 in January 2012 to $0.27 in March 2018, registering a 50% drop.
