Central America Buys More Turkish Cement

During the first quarter of 2020, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $48 million, and purchases from Turkey increased 154% compared to the same period in 2019.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to March of this year the main importer of hydraulic cements in Central America was Guatemala, with $18 million, followed by Nicaragua, with $13 million, El Salvador, with $10 million, Honduras and Panama, with $3 million each, and Costa Rica, with $900 thousand.

For the months in question, three of the six countries recorded year-on-year increases in their purchases. In El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua imports increased by 90%, 21% and 8%, in that order.

In the case of Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica the falls were 24%, 53% and 73%, respectively.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first quarter of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region increased by 3%, rising from $47 million to $48 million.

Regional purchases from Turkey show a significant increase for the periods under analysis, as imports grew by 154% from $3.7 million to $9.4 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to March 19% of the value purchased came from Turkey, 18% from Vietnam, 5% from South Korea, 5% from Barbados, 4% from Peru, 4% from Mexico and 2% from Colombia.

Turkey is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most for the period in question of the last four years, given that in 2017 no significant purchases were reported and in 2020 it monopolized 19% of the total imported by the region.

September 2018

In the first three months of 2018, countries in Central America imported $36 million worth of hydraulic cement, 9% more than was purchased in the same period in 2017.
