Central America Buys More Italian Furniture

In the first nine months of 2018, imports of home and office furniture in Central American countries totaled $270 million, and purchases from companies in Italy grew 19% over the same period in 2017.

Panama, Main Buyer
In the first nine months of 2018, the main importer of furniture in Central America was Panama with $85 million, followed by Costa Rica with $63 million, Guatemala with $41 million, Honduras with $31 million, El Salvador with $27 million and Nicaragua with $22 million.

Main Suppliers
From January to September, 25% of the value imported from Central America was from China, 23% from the U.S., 6% from Italy, 4% from Colombia and 4% from Brazil.

In the months in question of the last seven years, Italy has been one of the countries of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most, since in 2012 it represented 3% of the total value purchased, and in 2018 it rose to 6%.

Regional Business Behavior
Between the first nine months of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value imported into the region fell 7%, from $290 million to $270 million.

The year-on-year decline in imports from January to September, in general, contrasts with the reported rise in purchases from Italian companies, since between the first nine months of 2017 and the same period in 2018, increased 19%, growing from $14.6 million to $17.4 million.

In the first semester of the year, imports of home and office furniture in Central American countries reached $148 million, and purchases from Chinese companies grew 3% with respect to the same period in 2017.
