Central America Buys More Electric Transformers

In the first quarter of the year, countries in the region imported $81 million worth of electrical transformers, registering an increase of 9% compared to the amount reported in the same period in 2017.

Imports by country 
In the first three months of 2018 the main importer was Panama, with $22 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $15 million, Honduras, with $13 million, Guatemala, with $12 million, El Salvador, with $10 million and Nicaragua, with $9 million. 

Variation of regional imports 
Between January and March 2017 and the same period in 2018, the import value of transformers and electric converters and reactor coils in Central America increased by 9%, going from purchases of $74 million to $81 million. 

Origin of imports 

In the first quarter of the year, 30% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 16% from China, 10% from Mexico, 6% from Spain, 6% from Croatia and 4% from Colombia.

China is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years, as in 2012 it represented 10% of the region's total imports and last year the figure rose to 16%.

From January to September 2017, companies in Costa Rica bought $51 million worth of electrical transformers from abroad, 28% more than in the same period in 2016.
