Central America Buying More Plastic from Mexico

In 2017, the value of Central American purchases of plastic and its manufactures from companies in Mexico grew by 21% compared to 2016, in contrast to the decreases registered between 2013 and 2015.

Variation of regional imports 
Between 2016 and 2017 the value purchased by the region from Mexico grew by 21%, going from $332 million to $403 million. 

Imported volume rose by 26%, going from 131 thousand tons in 2016 to 166 thousand tons in 2017. 

Imports by country 
In 2017, the main importer of plastic and its manufactures in Central America from Mexico was Guatemala, with $133 million, followed by El Salvador, with $72 million, Costa Rica, with $69 million, Nicaragua, with $68 million, Honduras, with $37 million and Panama with $25 million. 

Price of imports 
Between January 2012 and December 2014, the average price of a kilo of Central American imports rose by 35%, increasing from $2.45 to $3.30. 

The trend was reversed from January 2015 to December 2017, as the average price per kilo imported fell from $3.21 to $1.94.

Nicaragua Imports Fewer Plastic Containers from El Salvador

June 2017

In 2016, Nicaragua purchased supplies for plastic used for transport or packaging for $29 million from the neighboring country, 12% less than in 2015.

The Plastic Market in Central America

May 2017

In 2016 the value of imported plastic and its manufactures in the region amounted to $3.668 million, equivalent to 1.7 million tons, 9% more than the volume purchased in 2015.
