Central America: Avocado Sales Increase in Importance

In recent years, regional avocado exports have gained importance, as in 2018 they amounted to $2.8 million, in 2019 they climbed to $10.9 million and in 2020 they rose to $11.9 million.

Guatemala Leads Regional Sales
In 2020, the main exporter in Central America was Guatemala, with $7 million, followed by Honduras, with $4 million, Costa Rica, with $2 thousand and Nicaragua with $200 thousand. Last year El Salvador and Panama reported no foreign sales.

Between 2019 and 2020, foreign sales of Costa Rican companies increased 339% and those of Honduras by 45%. In the cases of Guatemalan and Nicaraguan companies, their exports fell by 5% and 26%.

Regional Exports Grow 44%
Last year, the value exported by Central American companies amounted to $11.9 million, an amount that exceeds the $10.9 million recorded in 2019 by 10%.

Between 2019 and 2020, the volume of avocado exports fell by 14%, from 13,000 tons to 11,000 tons.

Rising Export Prices
Between June and December 2020, the average price per kilo of regional avocado exports rose by 1,358%, from US$0.12 to US$1.75 per kilo.

Main Markets for Central American Exports
Last year, the Netherlands was one of the main buyers of avocados from companies in the region, accounting for 24% of the total value exported from Central America, followed by the United Kingdom with 11%, Canada with 1% and Chile with 1%.

Last year, regional exports of vegetables totaled $180 million, 10% more than 2017, a rise explained by the behavior of company sales in Guatemala and Honduras.

Agricultural business in Central America

November 2018

Coffee is still the main agricultural product sold abroad, with annual exports of around $3,035 million, followed by bananas, with $2,574 million and sugar, with $1,241 million.
