Central America: Aluminum Imports Down 11%

In 2016 the volume of imported aluminum and its manufactures in the region amounted to 149 thousand tons, equivalent to $572 million, 11% less than the value bought in 2015.

Variation of regional imports
Between 2015 and 2016 the total value of aluminum and its manufactures imported into Central America fell by 11%, going from $646 million equivalent to 152,940 tons in 2015, to $572 million equivalent to 149,363 tons, by 2016.

Imports by country 
In 2016, the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in Central America was Guatemala with 35 thousand tons, followed by Costa Rica with 33 thousand tons, Panama with 32 thousand tons, El Salvador with 22 thousand tons, Honduras with 18 thousand tons and Nicaragua, with 8 thousand tons. 

Origin of regional imports 
In 2016, 21% of the volume imported by Central America came from the US, 21% from China, 11% from Mexico, 7% from Taiwan and 3% from Colombia.

Price of regional imports 
During the months between January 2012 and December 2016, the average price per kilo of imports registered its highest value in October 2015 at $5.40 per kilo, and the lowest was in July 2016, at $3.56 per kilo.

The Plastic Market in Central America

May 2017

In 2016 the value of imported plastic and its manufactures in the region amounted to $3.668 million, equivalent to 1.7 million tons, 9% more than the volume purchased in 2015.

Aluminum Trade in Central America

October 2016

In 2015 Costa Rica led the import of aluminum and articles made of aluminium in the region, with $166 million, followed by Guatemala, which imported $147 million, and thirdly Panama, with $129 million.
