Cement: Regional Purchases Up 9%

In the first three months of 2018, countries in Central America imported $36 million worth of hydraulic cement, 9% more than was purchased in the same period in 2017.

Imports by country 
Between January and March of this year the main importer of hydraulic cement in Central America was Nicaragua, with $15 million, followed by Guatemala, with $7 million, El Salvador, with $6 million, Honduras, with $5 million, Panama, with $3 million and Costa Rica, with $600 thousand.

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value imported into the region grew by 9%, increasing from $33.2 million to $36.3 million.

Regional purchases made from China registered a considerable increase in the periods in question, as imports increased by 27%, going from $4.9 million to $6.3 million.

Origin of imports
In the first three months of the year, 17% of the value purchased came from China, 10% from Vietnam, 5% from Colombia and 4% from Peru. 

China is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years, given that in 2012 there were no significant purchases and this year the country accounted for 17% of the total amount imported by the region.

During the first nine months of 2018, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $110 million, and purchases from Mexico doubled compared to the same period in 2017.

More Chinese Cement in Central America

January 2019

During the first six months of 2018, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $77 million, and purchases from China increased 42% over the same period in 2017.
