Cement: Imports up 6% in 2018

During 2018, Central American companies imported $151 million worth of hydraulic cement, 6% more than in 2017.

Imports by country
Last year, the main importer of hydraulic cements in Central America was Nicaragua, with $48 million, followed by Guatemala, with $44 million, El Salvador, with $25 million, Honduras, with $14 million, Panama, with $13 million and Costa Rica, with $10 million.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between 2017 and 2018, the value imported into the region grew 6%, from $143 million to $151 million.

Regional purchases from Mexico show a considerable increase for the years concerned, since imports increased 160% from $6.4 million to $16.8 million.

Origin of Imports
Last year, 11% of the value purchased came from China, 10% from Mexico, 10% from Vietnam and 7% from Peru.

China is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, given that in 2012 no significant purchases were reported and last year accounted for 11% of total imports by the region.

More Chinese Cement in Central America

January 2019

During the first six months of 2018, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $77 million, and purchases from China increased 42% over the same period in 2017.

Cement: Regional Purchases Up 9%

September 2018

In the first three months of 2018, countries in Central America imported $36 million worth of hydraulic cement, 9% more than was purchased in the same period in 2017.
