Cement: How do Markets Behave?

El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua were the Central American markets that increased their hydraulic cement imports in the first half of 2020 in year-on-year terms.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June 2020 the main importer of hydraulic cements in Central America was Guatemala, with $33 million, followed by Nicaragua, with $24 million, El Salvador, with $17 million, Honduras, with $7 million, Panama, with $4 million and Costa Rica, with $2 million.

For the months in question, three of the six countries recorded year-on-year increases in their purchases. In El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, imports increased by 31%, 12% and 11%, in that order.

In the case of Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica the falls were 46%, 59% and 70%, respectively.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region decreased by 6%, from $93 million to $87 million.

Regional Purchases made to Turkey register a considerable increase for the periods under analysis, as imports grew by 65% from $8 million to $13 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to June, 27% of the value purchased came from Vietnam, 15% from Turkey, 7% from Mexico, 5% from Barbados, 3% from South Korea, 2% from Peru, 1% from Colombia and 1% from the United States.

Vietnam is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, given that in 2012 no significant purchases were reported and in 2020 it accounted for 27% of total imports by the region.

Vietnamese Cement in Central America

September 2019

During the first quarter of 2019, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $47 million, and purchases from companies in Vietnam increased 155% over the same period in 2018.
