Cell Phones: Regional Purchases Decline 11%

During the first six months of 2020, Central American countries imported cell phones for $541 million, 11% less than what was reported in the same period of 2019, a drop that is mainly explained by the behavior of Panamanian, Honduran and Salvadoran purchases.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June 2020 the main buyer of cell phones in Central America was Guatemala, with $224 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $137 million, El Salvador, with $78 million, Honduras, with $61 million, Panama, with $30 million and Nicaragua, with $12 million.

Between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020, Costa Rican imports were the only ones to increase, reporting a 3% rise.

Nicaraguan purchases decreased 2%, Guatemalan 5%, Salvadoran 20%, Honduran 27% and Panamanian 32%.

Variation in Regional Business
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020 the value imported in the region decreased 11%, falling from $606 million to $541 million.

For the periods in question purchases from Vietnam increased by 273%, rising from $18 million in 2019 to $68 million in 2020.

Origin of Imports
From January to June 2020, 45% of the value imported into the region came from China, 22% from the U.S., 13% from Hong Kong and 13% from Vietnam.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most, since in the first half of 2012 it represented 32% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 45%.

December 2017

Between January and June 2017, the region imported $590 million worth of mobile phones, 10% more than the imports in the same period in 2016.
