During the third quarter of 2021, purchases made by Central America increased by almost 50% to $136 million, with Guatemala being the largest supplier with $38 million in sales to the region.

Costa Rica, Central America's top buyer
From January to September 2021 the top importer of corrugated paper or cardboard boxes in Central America was Costa Rica with $45 million, followed by Panama with $18 million, Honduras with $14 million, Guatemala with $8 million, El Salvador with $5 million and Nicaragua with $3 million.

A year-on-year increase in imports of boxes was reported in the region, with the following variations: Panama 25%, Costa Rica and Honduras 39%, El Salvador 46%, Nicaragua 107% and Guatemala 124%.

Increase in Regional Imports
Between January to September 2020 and the same period in 2021, purchases of paper or cardboard boxes increased by 48%, from $92 million to $136 million.

Regional purchases from Guatemalan companies increased by 45% for the periods in question.

Main Suppliers of Cardboard Boxes
In the third quarter of 2021, 28% of the value imported from Central America came from Guatemala, 27% from El Salvador, 19% from Honduras, 11% from the United States of America and 5% from Costa Rica.

By 2021, a recovery of the paper and cardboard sector is observed, reaching $2,471 million, equivalent to 1,942,360 tons, with the main supplier being the United States of America market with $837 million.

Rice: Purchases from the U.S. Up

For the third quarter of 2021, rice imports made by Central America showed a decrease of 31%, however, the main supplier of the region was the United States of America with $139 million, which represents 68% of the purchases made from Central America.
