Cardboard Boxes: Business with Mexico up 125%

From January to September 2020 Central America allocated $92 million to the import of paper or corrugated cardboard boxes, and purchases from Mexico increased 125% over what was reported in the same period of 2019.

Costa Rica, Central America's Main Buyer
From January to September 2020 the main importer of corrugated paper or cardboard boxes in Central America was Costa Rica, with $44 million, followed by Panama, with $18 million, Honduras, with $14 million, Guatemala, with $8 million, El Salvador, with $5 million, and Nicaragua, with $3 million.

Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica were the countries in the region that reported a year-on-year increase in imports of boxes, with variations of 55%, 5% and 2%, in that order.

El Salvador reported a 3% drop, El Salvador a 6% drop and Honduras a 23% drop.

Between January to September 2019 and the same period of 2020, purchases of paper or cardboard boxes recorded a 3% drop, decreasing from $95 million to $92 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of imports, regional purchases made from Mexican companies increased by 125% for the periods in question.

Main Cardboard Box Suppliers
In the first nine months of 2020, 8% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., 3% from Peru, 1% from China, 1% from Mexico and 1% from Germany.

During the first half of the year, imports of paper and cardboard in Central America reached $1.262 million, an increase of 9% compared to the same period in 2017.
