Canada CA-4 FTA negotiations to resume on Monday

Next Monday, negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement with Canada will be restarted.

In addition to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are also taking part.

The meetings will be held on December 15 and 16 and the Guatemalan delegation will be headed by Sonia Lainfiesta, negotiator from the Ministry of Economy; there will also be delegates from the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment.

"This will be the first official meeting for negotiations after many years, so it is unlikely that we will complete anything this week," the official added. Talk with Canada have been stagnant for six years.

Raúl Trejo, vice-minister for Guatemalan trade, indicated that coordination meetings have already been held in El Salvador to agree a schedule for the twelfth round of negotiations.

On April 27, the countries will have a coordination round where the guidelines and schedule for restarting the negotiations will be established.

The meeting seeks to restart talks for a Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the CA-4 countries (Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras).

Canada continues its commitment to conclude the FTA with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (the CA-4)

According to Canadian Embassy officials, both sides agreed to meet in the near future.

Ruben Morales, Guatemala's Vice Minister of Foreign Trade commented that consultation of the private sector will commence on Thursday the 13th.
