C.A. Request E.U Free Tariff for Liquor

Producers and importers of alcoholic beverages suggested a tariff reduction agreement between EU and CA.

This request could be included in the Association Agreement being negotiated between both blocks.

Pedro Lamport, President of the Central American Association of Importers and Producers of Alcoholic Beverages, told newspaper Elnuevodiario.com.ni: "The idea is for us to have the same treatment. Ideally zero and zero. If the agreement is progressive, so shall be it, but we don't want to be different to what already happens with U.S. products in Europe".

Central America-EU FTA Coming Into Force Soon

In late June the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union will be signed in Tegucigalpa, containing a section on trade which will take effect as soon as it is ratified by one of the governments of the region.

The final flourish of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU) - which consists of three pillars: economic, political and cooperation, is scheduled for between 28th and 29th June in Tegucigalpa, during a summit of Central American presidents.

EU-CA Negotiations Resume in Guatemala

Next Thursday, Central America and Europe will resume their unfinished negotiations for an Association Agreement between them.

Talks will last for two days, with negotiators trying to solve the differences both blocks have regarding how much tariffs to remove and how to do it on several sensible products.

Trade Benefits Lost with EU Agreement

The European Union is not willing to include already existing benefits in the Association Agreement with Central America.

Cencit, a Guatemalan commission which studies international treaties, remarked that losing the existing trade benefits would be counterproductive for the region. These include European market access for products manufactured in Central American free zones and maquilas.

EU Requests to Resume Negotiations with C.A.

The European Union has requested Central America to resume negotiations for an Association Agreement.

While gathering at Brussels, EU's foreign relationships ministers remarked the council's intention of concluding the negotiation process for an association agreement with Central America.
