Businesses Not Happy with Strict Customs Controls

The Director of Customs in Costa Rica has stated that they will continue to perform the exhaustive checks which are causing delays in unloading goods.

The Costa Rican Association of Cargo Agents, Consolidators and International Logistics Companies (Acacia), has denounced the misinterpretation of customs guidelines which is causing delays in unloading goods.

The Acacia said product losses are occurring, causing damages to dozens of importers and businessmen.

Gerardo Bolaños, chief of the Directorate General of Customs, acknowledged that the controls have been increased in order to combat abnormal practices. "We had a meeting with the majority of the representatives of the sectors that are involved with Customs, including carriers, shippers, airlines, freight forwarders, warehouses, depositories and clearing agents, who are concerned about some of the activities we are doing in Customs, which has to do with detecting excess goods or goods that go missing when unloading and goods other than those stated, this is solely and exclusively at the time of unloading.

It is true, we are doing things we did not do before, because before 60 plastic packages were declared and when we opened them they were 60 bundles of perfumery, when they declared 450 bundles of hydraulic carts , we checked them to find 450 packages of welding machines . Clearly we are straightening out this matter and if this upsets anyone I am sorry, that's my job and we will continue to perform these operations," said the official.

"We guarantee that there will be more controls and if we find anyone who declares certain goods and merchandise which appear different from what is stated or if there is more merchandise than declared, we will take the actions that the law provides us," he added.
