Bupa Insurance Arrives in Guatemala

The insurance company has initiated the process of entering the Guatemalan market with the aim of beginning operations in January 2011.

Bupa plans to invest $5 million over the next three years, its Latin American planning and strategy manager, Ricardo González, told Sigloxxi.com.

He added that, "its proposal is based around health services, giving access to both national and international hospitals and allowing customers to choose between a range of providers".

With the entry of the US firm BMI, Guatemalans now have a new health insurance option available in the country.

The Superintendency of Banks (SB) has authorized a change in the corporate name of the company, which was registered in the country as the BMI Insurance Company of Guatemala, Sociedad Anonima.

Insurers BUPA and MD International have expressed their intention of entering the Guatemalan market, just weeks after congress passed the Bill for Insurance Activity.

BUPA is based in England while MD International is from the United States. Both reportedly asked the Banking Superintendence for information on the permits and procedures required to operate in the country.

ASI Insurer Would Enter Costa Rica

Puerto Rican Atlantic Southern Insurance Company (ASI), started the procedures to operate in the country.

The company plans to market life, accident and health insurance for working class clients.

Alexis González, company president, told website Elfinancierocr.com that "health insurance will be their flagship product, once they get authorization by the Insurance Superintendence.

Competency in Insurance Already Exists in Costa Rica

Magisterio S.A. insurance is the first business authorized by SUPEN to operate in the market of national insurance that was up to now a monopoly of the state, INS.

The business is owned by Sociedad de Seguros de Vida del Magisterio, which already offered life insurance to the members of the teaching community and their relatives – a sector which included 22.000 individual clients and more than 40,000 in group insurance - in which they were the only exception to the monopoly of the National Institute of Insurance. Now, it will be authorized to offer its products to all of the domestic market, without restrictions.
