Honduras - Guatemala Customs Union on Hold

The legislative session in Guatemala has ended and the Enabling Protocol needed to implement the customs union planned for December 15, was not even looked at by lawmakers.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that "... The Protocol was not studied by the plenary, despite having a favorable ruling from the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the existence of a privileged motion signed by several heads of benches, as was stated by the deputy and president of the Commission, Juan Alcázar, so that it could be read and approved as a matter of national urgency. "

"... According to the road map, the implementation of the customs union should have started this December 1, but delays in the legislative chambers forced the postponement of the formal launch until 15 December. Enrique Lacs, an international trade expert, said that the ratification of the Protocol is needed so that the administrative improvements being proposed, as well as the actions of the authorities of both countries, can have legal support.
