Bread and Cookies: Business with the U.S. Grows at 4%

In the first nine months of 2019, Central American countries spent $352 million on imports of bakery, pastry and cookie products, and purchases from companies in the U.S. grew 4% over the same period in 2018.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2019, the main importer of bakery products in Central America was Guatemala with $92 million, followed by Panama with $61 million, Costa Rica with $57 million, Honduras with $53 million, El Salvador with $46 million and Nicaragua with $43 million.

Price of Purchases
From January 2012 to September 2019, the average price per kilo of imported bakery products in the countries of the region has remained stable, fluctuating between $1.80 and $2.25.

Main Sellers
During the first nine months of 2019, 15% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 7% from Mexico, 4% from Peru and 2% from Colombia.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, since in 2012 it represented 11% of the value purchased, and in 2019 the proportion rose to 15%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the volume imported of bakery, pastry and biscuit products reported 2% decrease, and in the case of imported value registered a slight increase from $347 million to $352 million.

In the case of purchases from the U.S., in the period in question went from $50 million to $52 million.
