Brazilian Water Heaters Are Gaining Ground

In recent years’ Brazilian water heaters have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, as in the first half of 2014 they represented 14% of total Central American imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 31%.

Costa Rica, Main Buyer
In the first six months of 2020 the main importer of water heaters in Central America was Costa Rica with $3.6 million, followed by Guatemala, with $3.1 million, Panama, with $800 thousand, El Salvador with $700 thousand, Honduras with $600 thousand and Nicaragua with $400 thousand.

During the first semester of 2020, Nicaraguan imports increased 14% in year-on-year terms and Costa Rican imports increased 11%.

Purchases by Salvadoran companies decreased by 0.6%, Guatemalan ones by 10%, Honduran ones by 42% and Panamanian ones by 52%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and June 2019 and the same period in 2020, imports decreased from $10.3 million to $9.1 million.

Unlike purchases in general, for the periods in question imports from Germany increased 32%, in this case it was from $400 thousand to $600 thousand.

More Brazilian Water Heaters in Central America
From January to June last year, 31% of the value imported from Central America came from Brazil, 30% from the USA, 17% from China, 7% from Germany, 4% from Mexico and 2% from Israel.

For the period in question in recent years Brazil is one of the source markets for purchases that has most increased its presence in Central America, rising from 14% in 2016 to 31% in 2020.

Note: The report includes imports of electric, immersion, instantaneous gas and other types of water heaters.

In recent years Chinese water heaters have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, since from January to September 2012 they represented 12% of total Central American imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 18%.

Water Heaters: More Business with Mexico

February 2020

In the first nine months of 2019, Central America imported water heaters for $15 million, and purchases from companies in Mexico increased 71% over the same period in 2018.
