Guatemala, Main Buyer
In 2020, the main importer of water heaters in Central America was Guatemala with $7 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $6 million, Panama, with $2 million, El Salvador with $1.2 million, Honduras with $1.1 million and Nicaragua with $800 thousand.

Last year, Nicaraguan imports were the only ones that increased, reporting a 26% year-on-year variation.

Purchases by Costa Rican companies decreased by 0.65%, Salvadoran ones by 11%, Guatemalan ones by 12%, Panamanian ones by 38% and Honduran ones by 43%.

Change in Regional Imports
Between 2019 and 2020, imports decreased from $21 million to $18 million, which is equivalent to a decrease of 14%.

In contrast to overall purchases, for the years in question imports from Israel increased 145% and purchases from Spain increased by 4%.

More Brazilian Water Heaters in Central America
Last year, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from Brazil, 26% from the USA, 20% from China, 5% from Germany, 4% from Mexico and 1% from Thailand.

In recent years, China is one of the markets of origin of purchases that has increased its presence in Central America the most, rising from 12% in 2012 to 20% in 2020.

Note: The report includes imports of electric, immersion, instantaneous gas and other types of water heaters.

In the first nine months of 2019, Central America imported water heaters for $15 million, and purchases from companies in Mexico increased 71% over the same period in 2018.
