Brazil to Export Beef to United States

A statutory amendment will allow Brazil to use a World Trade Organization quota to export beef to the United States.

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Nicaraguan producers and exporters have raised concerns about the possible impact of changes in trade policies which are being discussed by the U.S. Congress, which directly affect the export of peanuts, tobacco and meat, the latter product due to possible entry of beef from Brazil.

The president of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua (APEN) Enrique Zamora said in a letter submitted to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce of the United States (the entity that would allow the entry of beef from Brazil) "... Brazil is a threat because of its size and productive force. "

"... The amendment gives Brazil the right to use a quota of the World Trade Organization, WTO, in a category called "Other" to export meat to the United States. Meanwhile, Nicaragua would be left with a quota from the Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Central America and the Dominican Republic, DR-CAFTA, amounting to 15,000 tons, even though, according to entrepreneurs, the potential exists to export about 50,000 tonnes of the product.
