Bottled Water: Business with Guatemala Rising

For the second quarter of 2021, Panama continues to be the largest importer of bottled water, with $5 million in purchases, the main supplier being the United States with 55.21% of sales.

Panamanian Companies, Main Buyers
In the first six months of the year, the main importer of bottled water in Central America was Panama with $5 million, followed by El Salvador with $1.7 million, Costa Rica and Honduras with $1.6 million, Guatemala with $1.3 million and Nicaragua with $0.8 million.

For the second quarter, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras were the markets in the region that increased their imports, with year-on-year increases of 24.45%, 52.77%, 11.3% and 27.47%, respectively.

Panama and Costa Rica reduced their purchases by 15.5% and 18.64%, respectively.

Variation in Regional Business
Between January and June 2020 and the same period in 2021, the value of bottled water imports in Central America increased by 10.01%, from $11.6 million to $12.7 million.

For the periods in question, Central American purchases from Guatemalan companies grew from $1.2 million to $2.4 million.

U.S. Main Seller
In the first six months of the year, 55.21% of the value of imports in the region came from the U.S., 19.18% from Guatemala, 9.13% from Italy, 4.98% from France, 2.65% from Costa Rica and 2.1% from El Salvador.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 31.85% of total Central American purchases and in the second quarter of 2021 that proportion rose to 55.21%.
