Boost for Nicaraguan Cocoa Promotion

To develop a strategy for positioning the product worldwide, a commission made up of producers and traders has been created internally in the union of exporters.

From a statement issued by the Association of Producers and Exporters in Nicaragua (APEN):

On Friday November 13, 2015 with the presence of representatives from the various sectors that make up the cocoa value chain (producers, processors, traders, raw material suppliers and machinery, support service providers and facilitators), the APEN 's Commission on Cocoa Sector was created.

At the start of the meeting some welcoming comments were made by Lic. Azucena Castillo, General Manager, who presented the role of APEN's Sectoral Committees to be run by Lic. Sonia Somarriba and with the facilitation of Lic. Marlen Landeros, areas of action for the commission to work on were identified. On that occasion it was agreed to invite the participation of the public sector, rotate the venues of the meetings in the territories and a working committee was named to be coordinated by Mr. Gerardo Paez from the company named Licor de Cocoa.

As of September 21st, Nicaragua joined the list of countries of fine cocoa producers drawn up by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), after the country’s cocoa production was recognized as 100 percent fine cocoa.

Costa Rica Exports its Cocoa Unprocessed

Costa Rican cacao is the finest in the world, but the country lacks the technology to process it, and the chocolate consumed is mostly imported.

According to an article in Elfinancierocr.com, "Two projects developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE by its initials in Spanish) have focused since 2007 on increasing the quantity and quality of crops" This has allowed a rise in cultivation and production of cocoa, which after the attack of a pest in the 80s, was practically nil.

Guatemala and Costa Rica join Cacao producers association

Authorities from seven Latin American countries will create the "Association Fine Aroma Cacao Producing Countries" this week in Ecuador.

This organization will be established at meeting of producers and exporters of this type of cacao from Venezuela, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guatemala, Granada and Ecuador, declared Walter Poveda, Ecuadoran Minister of Agriculture, in a press release.
