Boom in Medical Supplies Industry

There are 46 companies in Costa Rica in the medical industry whose exports in the first 10 months of 2012 totaled $1.24 billion.

Elfinancierocr.com reports that "The entry into Costa Rica of several companies in the medical industry that has taken place in the last three years is reflected in the growth of the sector's exports. Between January and October this year 20.4% more currency was generated than in 2011, making it one of the fastest growing sectors. "

Within the sector, the products that contributed to growth were "medical devices (52.7% increase) and needles and catheters," which doubled its exports, according to data from the Foreign Trade Promotion Office (Procomer) .

Also "dental appliances gained momentum this year and have generated 18 times what they did in 2011 reaching $5.5 million."

Medical Industry: New Complex to Be Built

Costa Rica's Establishment Labs Holdings Inc. will invest $35 million in the execution of the first stage of the construction of its new innovation campus called "Sulàyöm", which will be located in the Coyol Free Trade Zone in Alajuela.

Costa Rica: Improving Export Figures

Exports accumulated between January and August of this year grew by 9% compared to the same period in 2016, going from $6.618 million to $7.19 billion.

Procomer statistics indicate that the accumulated amount of $7.19 billion is the highest in the last five years. Exports made by companies operating under the free zone regime increased by 13%, while those outside of the special regime increased by 4%.

Costa Rica: Growth in Trade in Medical Devices

In 2016 the export of cosmetic, dental, cardiovascular, and endoscopy goods and others generated revenues of $2.556 billion, equivalent to 26% of the total exported by the country.

The export value of manufactured medical and precision equipment exceeded $2.5 billion, almost matching exports reported by the agricultural sector, which totaled $2.69 billion last year.
