Better Air Connectivity between Nicaragua and the US

The private companies' association is in talks with United Airlines to promote the opening of a route that connects Nicaragua with the east coast of the United States.

Representatives from the Consejo Superior de Empresa Privada (Cosep) announced that during negotiations they have also considered the possibility of a flight connecting Nicaragua with a city on the west coast, such as San Francisco or Los Angeles.

The president of Cosep, José Adán Aguerri, stated that "... they have initiated the first talks to determine, first, this company's level of interest and, secondly, what that route would be."

Aguerri detailed that "... the airline is United Airlines and they are thinking about opening up a route to the east, which could be to New York, or one to the west, which could be to San Francisco or Los Angeles."

Fewer Flights to Nicaragua

The union of Nicaraguan businessmen has stated that starting from September, Copa Airlines will stop operating frequencies to Managua from San Jose, Costa Rica and Panama City.

According to the Superior Council of Private Enterprise in Nicaragua (Cosep), "...The affected flights are Managua - Panama, San José-Managua, Managua-San José and Panama-Managua, while the only route that the airline is keeping active is Managua-Guatemala, however, only Monday, Wednesday and Friday."

The President of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP), José Adán Aguerri, told that the airlines who may be interested are carrying out an evaluation process and are review of the subject.

Growing Air Traffic in Nicaragua

In the last four years the number of international commercial flights that arrived in the country has grown by 26%, while the number of passengers went up 25% in the same period.

Statistics from Empresa Administradora de Aeropuertos Internacionales (EAAI) show that while in 2013 the country received 6,356 international commercial flights with 549,000 passengers, last year these figures rose to 8,032 flights and 674,000 passengers.

An Improved Domestic Air Terminal for Managua

According to the private sector airport infrastructure needs to be improved in order to provide services to meet increasing demand for domestic flights.

Before the start of the next tourist season in the region, the union of private companies in Nicaragua has highlighted the need to improve conditions in the domestic air terminal, in order to provide better services to travelers taking flights to different parts of the country.
