Best-Selling Companies in Central America

Six Central American companies are included on the America Economia's Ranking of the 500 largest companies in Latin America.

Listed in 178th place RECOPE, Costa Rica’s Oil Refinery, is the Central American company with the highest sales, totaling $2,701 million.

Follow Intel in Costa Rica with $ 2,101 Million, Panama Canal Authority (ACP), with $ 2,000 million, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Costa Rica Power Company) with $ 1,822 million and completing the list, the two main regional airlines Copa Airlines with sales of $ 1,253 million and Grupo Taca with $ 940 million.

In the ranking, organized by sales volume, financial companies were not included because their value are not measured by sales but by assets.

Recope, Intel, Panama Canal Authority, ICE and Copa Airlines are listed in AméricaEconomía's ranking of the 500 largest companies in Latin America.

In their analysis on Latin America's 500 largest companies, AméricaEconomía Intelligence shows the impact of the economic crisis in the region. For these 500, income fell 3.7% in 2008, a sharp contrast from the 23.7% expansion registered in 2007.

Moin refinery in Costa Rica to be expanded

Recope, in alliance with a Chinese oil company, will create a new private company that will modernize and expand the Moin refinery in Limon.

Nacion.com reports: "In this case, the document - dated October 28, 2008 - authorizes the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (Recope) to negotiate and sign an agreement to create "a joint company" with the China National Petroleum Corporation International LTD, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation.
