Belgium Mining Company in Honduras

Belgian mining company Nyrstar has bought 92.3% of the shares in Breakwater, the principal partner in El Mochito, the American Pacific Honduras mine.

Belgian-based multinational Nyrstar paid $626 million for 92.3% of the shares of Breakwater, principal partner in the American Pacific Honduras mine (known as Ampac or El Mochito), through its Canadian subsidiary, Nyrstar Resources Canada.

Mining exports in Honduras totaled $200 million in 2011, $50 million more than in 2010. At present there are two mining companies operating in the country: the San Andres gold mine owned by Canada's Aura Minerals, and Breakwater Resources’ zinc and lead mine, reported Eduardo Garcia Lopez on

"According to Kate Dinon, Nyrstar’s communications officer, the purchase contributed significantly to the production totals shown at year end 2011. “All of Breakwater’s mines have exceeded production performance expectations. The El Mochito mine contributed approximately 10,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate, 4,900 tonnes of lead concentrate and 598,000 troy ounces of silver", noted the article.

Mining in Honduras: $168 million Exported in 2017

Gold, silver, lead and zinc were some of the main materials exported during 2017, and the main buyers were the USA, Germany, Aruba, Austria and Belgium.

The authorities at the Honduran Institute of Geology and Mines (Inhgeomin) presented figures for 2017 and explained that the good performance achieved last year was mainly due to favourable international prices and to the reactivation in economies such as the United States, which led to an increase in demand for metals and minerals, especially for construction.

The Belgian company Nyrstar sold to Morumbi Resources 100% of the subsidiary American Pacific Honduras, owner of the El Mochito zinc mine.

Toronto, Ontario, September 22, 2016 – Morumbi Resources Inc. (“Morumbi” or the “Company”) (TSX-V:MOC) is pleased to announce that it has entered into a share purchase agreement (the “Agreement”) with certain affiliates of Nyrstar NV (collectively "Nyrstar") to purchase 100% of Nyrstar's indirect subsidiary American Pacific Honduras SA de CV ("AMPAC") and its flagship asset, the producing El Mochito Zinc Mine (collectively "El Mochito") in Honduras (the “Transaction”).

Canadian Nikos Explorations acquired 100% of Fortress de Nicaragua, which owns 168.000 hectares of mining exploration rights.

As payment, Nikon transferred 20 million shares of its common stock (with an average price of $ 0.07) to shareholders of Fortress de Nicaragua and 20 million stock options, exercisable at $ 0.1 per share.

Honduras: Mochito Mine Increases Production by 25%

January 2010

In 2009, the zinc and lead mine Mochito, owned by Breakwater Resources, increased production by 25% when compared to 2008.

The mine produced 68.552 tons of zinc and 22.110 tons of lead in 2009.

In a press release, the company also announced that in 2010 it plans to invest $15.9 in mine development and new equipment, plus $1.6 million in mining exploration.
