Beer in Central America: Purchases Up 32%

From January to September 2019, foreign purchases of beer in Central America amounted to $170 million, 32% more than reported in the same period in 2018, with Guatemala and El Salvador being the markets that registered the most significant increases in their imports.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first nine months of 2019, the main beer importer in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $67 million, followed by Panama with $39 million, Honduras with $38 million, El Salvador with $14 million, Costa Rica with $10 million and Nicaragua with $2 million.

For the months in question, all the countries recorded year-on-year increases in their purchases. In Guatemala and El Salvador imports increased 44%, in each, while in Panama and Honduras the increases were 36% and 19%, in that order.

In the case of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the increases were 17% and 7%, respectively.

Regional Business on the Rise
For the period from January to September 2018 and 2019, the value of beer imports into Central America increased 32%, rising from $128 million in 2018 to $170 million in 2019.

For the periods in question, regional purchases made from the U.S. increased 54%, rising from $39 million to $54 million.

Main Sellers
As of September 2019, 46% of the value purchased by Central America came from Mexico, 32% from the USA, 3% from Belgium and 2% from the Netherlands.

Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question in the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 31% of total purchases and in 2019 it grew to 46%.

In the first nine months of 2018, beer imports in Central America totaled $128 million, 50% more than in the same period in 2017, and the increase is because of the behavior of purchases from Mexico.

November 2018

Because of the purchase behavior from Mexico, during the first half of the year, beer imports in Central America totaled $83 million, 45% more than in the same period in 2017.
