Beer Purchases Up 40% in 2018

In 2018 beer imports in Central America totaled $181 million, 40% more than in 2017, and the rise is because of the behavior of purchases from Mexico and the United States.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In 2018, the main importer of beer in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $68 million, followed by Honduras, with $47 million, Panama, with $36 million, El Salvador and Costa Rica, with $14 million each, and Nicaragua, with $3 million.

Regional business upwards
Between 2017 and 2018, the value of beer imported into Central America increased 40%, rising from $130 million in 2017 to $181 million in 2018.

For the years concerned, regional purchases from Mexico increased 39%, from $59 million to $81 million.

Main sellers
In 2018, 44% of the value purchased by Central America was from Mexico, 32% from the U.S., 2% from Portugal and 2% from Belgium.

Mexico is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, since in 2012 represented 30% of total purchases and in 2018 increased to 44%.

In the first nine months of 2018, beer imports in Central America totaled $128 million, 50% more than in the same period in 2017, and the increase is because of the behavior of purchases from Mexico.

November 2018

Because of the purchase behavior from Mexico, during the first half of the year, beer imports in Central America totaled $83 million, 45% more than in the same period in 2017.

Beer in Central America: Imports Growing

August 2018

From January to March of 2018 Central American countries bought $40 million worth of malt beer from abroad, 46% more than the same period in 2017.
