Beer: Business with Mexico Still Rising

From January to April 2020, Central American companies imported $30 million in malt beer from Mexico, 7% more than in the same period in 2019.

Variation of Imports by Market
During the first quarter of 2020, companies in Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras and El Salvador increased their beer purchases from Mexican companies, reporting year-on-year variations of 205%, 70%, 49% and 14%, respectively.

In the case of Guatemala, for the period in question, imports from Mexico fell, recording a -13% variation with respect to the same period in 2019. Nicaragua did not make any significant purchases.

Guatemala, Main Buyer of Mexican Beer
In the first four months of 2020, the main Central American buyer of malt beer from Mexico was Guatemala with $18 million, followed by Panama with $7 million and El Salvador with $2 million.

For the four-month period under analysis, imports from Honduras amounted to $1.9 million, and purchases by Costa Rican companies totaled $1.3 million.

More Mexican Beer in Central America
Between the first four months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported by the countries of the region increased by 7%, from $28 million to $30 million.

This rise complements the increase reported from January to April 2019, when the year-on-year variation was 68%.

Alcoholic beverages: Imports increase 25%

October 2018

During the first three months of the year, the countries of the region reported imports of alcoholic beverages for $88 million, 25% more than what was reported in the same quarter of 2017.

August 2018

From January to March of 2018 Central American countries bought $40 million worth of malt beer from abroad, 46% more than the same period in 2017.
