Beef: U.S. Business Increases

From January to September 2018, countries in the region reported $422 million in beef sales abroad, and exports to the United States grew 16% over the same period in 2017.

Nicaragua, main seller
In the first nine months of 2018, the main exporter of the region continued to be Nicaragua, with $364 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $47 million, Panama, with $15 million, Honduras, with $11 million and Guatemala, with $5 million. El Salvador did not register significant exports.

Variation in regional business
Between January and September 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value of fresh, chilled and frozen beef exported from Central America fell by 4%, from $463 million to $442 million.

In contrast to the general sales performance, during the periods concerned, exports to the U.S. grew from $151 million to $175 million.

Destination of exports
From January to March 2018, 40% of the value exported from Central America went to the U.S., 8% to Puerto Rico, 8% to Mexico, 4% to Taiwan and 3% to China.

Export prices
Between November 2014 and September 2018, the average price per kilo exported of fresh, chilled and frozen beef from the region fell 19%, from $5.34 to $4.35.

From January to March 2019, the countries of the region reported $154 million in sales of beef abroad, and exports to Puerto Rico grew 12% over the same period in 2017.

In the first quarter of the year, countries in the region reported $148 million in beef sales abroad, and sales to the United States increased by 25% compared to the same period in 2017.
