Beef: Sales in the Region Increase

During the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 22 % was observed, reaching $640 million in exports of fresh, refrigerated and frozen beef, however, in volume it only represented a 2 percent increase, reaching 125,448 tons.

Nicaragua, Main Seller
During the third quarter of 2021 the region's leading exporter continued to be Nicaragua with $398 million, followed by Costa Rica with $84 million, Panama with $24 million, Honduras with $16 million and Guatemala with $4 million. El Salvador did not record significant exports.

For the period in question, Nicaraguan sales increased by 28% year-on-year, Costa Rican sales by 18% and Guatemalan sales by 19%. In the case of Honduran and Panamanian exports, declines of 28% were reported.

Regional Sales Up
Between the third quarter of 2020 and 2021, the value of fresh, refrigerated and frozen beef exports from Central America rose 22%, from $527 million to $640 million.

Regional sales to the U.S. increased 5.82%, from $232.1 million to $245.6 million, and exports to El Salvador rose from $87.9 million to $111.7 million, an increase of 27.08%.

Destination of Exports
By September 2021, 38.37% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the U.S., 17.46% for El Salvador, 13.66% for Mexico, 10.89% for China and 6.57% for Puerto Rico.

Export Prices
Between September 2020 and 2021, the average price per kilo of fresh, refrigerated and frozen beef exported from the region increased from $4.22 to $5.56.

From January to September 2018, countries in the region reported $422 million in beef sales abroad, and exports to the United States grew 16% over the same period in 2017.

In the first quarter of the year, countries in the region reported $148 million in beef sales abroad, and sales to the United States increased by 25% compared to the same period in 2017.
