Beef Meat: Regional Sales Grow 4%

From January to March 2019, the countries of the region reported $154 million in sales of beef abroad, and exports to Puerto Rico grew 12% over the same period in 2017.

Nicaragua, Main Seller
In the first three months of 2019, the region's main exporter continued to be Nicaragua, with $122 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $22 million, Panama, with $5 million, Honduras, with $4 million and Guatemala, with $2 million. El Salvador did not register significant exports.

Variation in Regional Business
Between January and March 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of fresh, chilled and frozen beef exported from Central America registered a 4% increase, going from $148 million to $154 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of sales, during the periods in question exports to Puerto Rico grew from $11.7 million to $13.2 million.

Destination of Exports
In the first quarter of 2019, 40% of the value exported from Central America went to the U.S., 9% to Puerto Rico, 7% to Mexico, 7% to China and 3% to Taiwan.

Export Prices
Between November 2014 and March 2019, the average price per kilo exported of fresh, chilled and frozen beef from the region fell 21%, from $5.34 to $4.19.

In 2016 countries in the region exported 41,208 tons of beef to the US, 7% more than in 2015.
