Banana: Sales to the Netherlands grow at 36%

In the first six months of 2019, Central American companies recorded $590 million in banana exports, and sales to the Netherlands grew 36% over the same period in 2018.

Costa Rica and Guatemala, Main Exporters
From January to June 2019, the main exporter of fresh or dried bananas in Central America was Costa Rica with $484 million, followed by Guatemala with $456 million, Honduras with $249 million, Panama with $66 million, Nicaragua with $12 million and El Salvador with $100,000.

Regional Business Downwards
Between the first half of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the value of banana exports registered a 6% decrease, going from 1,312 million to $1,235 million.

In the case of exports made by the region to the Netherlands grew for the periods in question, going from $92 million to $124 million.

U.S., Main Buyer
In the first six months of 2019, 65% of the value exported from Central America went to the U.S., 10% to the Netherlands, 5% to the United Kingdom and 3% to Italy.

The Netherlands is the destination market for Central American exports that has grown the most in the first six months of the last eight years, since in 2012 represented less than 0.5% of sales and last year that proportion rose to 10%.
