Bad Year for Tourism in the Dominican Republic

During 2019, 5.36 million foreign tourists arrived in the country, a figure 5% lower than that reported in 2018, a drop that can be explained by the news published in the middle of the year regarding the death of several American tourists in the hotels of Punta Cana.

Wednesday, January 15, 2020

The Dominican tourism sector was the focus of an unfortunate media campaign about unfortunate events that occurred to some tourists from the United States of America in some hotels in the country during the first half of 2019, which generated a high volume of cancellations in air bookings scheduled by travelers to the Dominican Republic, reflected in a year-on-year drop in the number of foreign visitors, reported the Central Bank.

The official document states that "... However, in the last months of 2019 a recovery in the trend of foreign arrivals was observed, registering less negative year-on-year growth rates than in the period close to the events that catalyzed the aforementioned media campaign.

It is important to note that when analyzing the trajectory of travel reservations to the Dominican Republic obtained from the database of ForwardKeys, a company dedicated to the analysis of the travel industry worldwide, it is expected that the influence of non-resident foreigners will continue to recover in the following months until the growth rate of tourist arrivals to the Dominican Republic is normalized, especially towards the second half of this year 2020.

As for the accumulated reception of foreigners according to regions of residence, during the recently ended year 2019 it is observed that 58.4% of travelers arrived from North America, 23.6% from Europe, 13.3% from South America, 4.3% from Central America and the Caribbean and the remaining 0.4% from Asia and the rest of the world.
