Avocado: Potential Business

In recent years, Dominican avocado exports have tripled, mainly because of sales to the U.S. and Puerto Rican markets.

Thursday, January 31, 2019

Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture detail that avocado exports from the Dominican Republic between 2015 and 2017 have increased from $13 million to $36 million, and in the case of sales to the U.S. and Puerto Rico have increased from $8 million to $29 million and from one million dollars to $5 million, respectively, for the years concerned.

Manuel Castillo, head of the marketing and sales department of the Macapi group, told Eldinero.com.do that "... in 2018 around 500 avocado vans, equivalent to US$15 or US$20 million, were exported by Macapi and placed directly in U.S. supermarkets, with no health problems, since it claims to comply with all international regulations."

Castillo added that "... the seeds used in sowing, which are creole and the Apollo produced by us. Right now, they are half Apollo, half Creole, but we are trying to make a transition so that they are all Apollo because they have a better response, so this year we are going to produce about 300 thousand trees and of those trees, half are with our seeds."
